Medical Evacuation Motorcycle Combo

A casualty lies across the sidecar of this motorcycle combination, with a driver at the handlebars. The stretcher arrangement makes the evacuation role immediately clear. It is an unusual support subject in a range with many tanks and firing figures, and a complete small scene built around moving one wounded man.

Ambushed SS Citroën

The Citroën’s open doors, damaged body and two fallen figures depict the aftermath of an ambush. The car supplies most of the setting, so it works as a compact vignette. The title does not identify a documented incident, and it should not be presented as a reconstruction of one of the massacres discussed below.

The history behind the figures

The Waffen-SS in WWII

The Waffen-SS was the armed branch of the SS and fought in major campaigns of the Second World War. Its battlefield record was intertwined with its place in the Nazi state: its units participated in the Holocaust, mass shootings, murderous operations against civilians and the killing of prisoners of war. Personnel also served in the concentration-camp system. Civilians and captured servicemen were victims of this violence in areas where Waffen-SS formations operated. The four cases below show how the murder of prisoners and civilians accompanied campaigns in France and Belgium from 1940 to 1944. U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Four documented war crimes

27 May 1940 · France

Le Paradis

Soldiers of the SS Totenkopf Division murdered 97 British soldiers who had surrendered near Le Paradis. The victims were men of the Royal Norfolk Regiment. The killings during the campaign in France show that the murder of prisoners by Waffen-SS troops began well before the last years of the war.

Abbaye d’Ardenne

Members of the 12th SS Panzer Division murdered 18 Canadian prisoners at the abbey over these two days. Kurt Meyer had established his regimental headquarters there. He was later convicted following the killings. The memorial commemorates 20 Canadians, including two more believed to have been killed later in June.

Oradour-sur-Glane

Troops from the Der Führer regiment of the Das Reich division rounded up the village’s inhabitants. They separated the men from the women and children, carried out mass killings and burned the village. Women and children were murdered in the church. The memorial’s account records a deliberate attack on civilians.

Malmedy / Baugnez

At the Baugnez crossroads near Malmedy, troops of Kampfgruppe Peiper captured Americans during the Ardennes offensive and shot the prisoners in a field. At least 84 American soldiers were killed. Some survivors escaped or remained still among the bodies. The massacre became the subject of a postwar war-crimes trial.

These four cases are examples, not a complete account. The Waffen-SS’s participation in persecution and mass murder extended across occupied Europe, including the occupied Soviet territories.

What the figures represent

The WS prefix covers more than one service, campaign or kind of subject. The index includes Wehrmacht personalities, medical scenes, prisoners and resistance figures as well as Waffen-SS combat troops. A model’s release code identifies its place in the King & Country range; the uniform, equipment and named subject establish the historical connection.

Wittmann’s tanks are a good example of why the individual release matters. WS015, WS043, WS344 and WS352 share an association with the same commander, but represent different finishes and moments in his career. The winter tank’s barrel markings also reproduce a wartime presentation of claimed victories. Such markings are part of the model’s subject; they do not independently verify a combat total.

Historical photographs

Wartime photographs and the WS subjects

These photographs give dated comparisons for named tank figures and the broader German infantry subjects in the WS range. They also show the work of German wartime propaganda photographers.

Wittmann on a Tiger I, May 1944

This photograph predates the fighting at Villers-Bocage. Wittmann sits above the Tiger’s textured armour, making his black uniform and the turret details easy to compare with K&C’s named Tiger releases. It is useful as a portrait and equipment reference; the archive caption does not establish it as the particular tank represented by WS043.

The range’s walking infantry

WS includes Wehrmacht subjects as well as Waffen-SS releases. This June 1940 photograph of German army infantry is a comparison for WS040 Walking Wehrmacht Infantry: the men carry their weapons and equipment in a road column. The formation and date matter when placing such figures beside the range’s later-war vehicles.
