The Operation ToyBox catalog · WS201

The gunner in WS201 carries his machine gun above the shoulder while his helmet hangs against the front of his equipment. The open head and mustache give him a distinct face, but the weapon is the detail that matters most when dating a display.

Read past the early-war wording

The archived description refers generally to early-war marching photographs. The product title, however, identifies an MG42, a weapon introduced in 1942.

The U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command’s MG34 record explicitly places the introduction of the MG42 in that year. WS201 should therefore not be presented as an accurately equipped 1940 or 1941 gunner merely because neighboring marching figures suggest those settings.

The carrying pose reveals a different side of the gun

The long weapon rises diagonally behind the head instead of extending horizontally toward a target. The helmet and other equipment gather at the waist, leaving the gunner’s face visible.

That makes the release a useful contrast with prone machine-gun teams. The same broad weapon role is represented during movement, when the equipment has to be carried rather than operated.

The ammunition carrier completes the idea

WS202 supplies a companion with additional ammunition. The two can suggest the distributed burden around a machine gun without requiring a firing position or a large scenic base.

Leave enough room above the shoulder to show the entire weapon. The exposed head, hanging helmet and diagonal gun are the identifying combination to compare in secondhand photographs.

WS201 belongs in the catalog as a marching specialist with an important chronology note. The sculpt is easy to enjoy on its own, and checking the weapon’s date makes its place in a historical display more precise.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived WS201 product record lists a release date of September 2012 and a retirement date of July 2017. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
