WS229 looks almost like a small open truck until the eye reaches its tracked rear half. The field-gray body, passenger benches and removable canvas canopy give the Demag a practical transport identity quite different from the armored carriers elsewhere in the WS series.
What does the one-ton classification mean?
Overloon’s museum description identifies the Sd.Kfz. 10 as a light prime mover with a one-tonne towing capacity. That figure describes its towing class, not the weight of the vehicle itself. The museum records service towing light guns and carrying ammunition or repair equipment.
That background explains the appeal of a model whose most prominent feature is usable space. The story concerns moving people and loads, rather than mounting the largest weapon on the shelf.
The canopy changes what you see
King & Country includes a driver and a detachable canopy. With the canvas fitted, the eye follows the tall covered passenger area. Removing it exposes the benches and makes the interior part of the display.
Additional passengers and supplies are separate. WS231 was specifically introduced as a two-man passenger set for this vehicle, providing a natural companion without changing the original contents of WS229.
A useful bridge between figures and vehicles
A tank often becomes the center of a scene by sheer size. This Demag can instead connect a standing group with a road or an equipment area, allowing the people to remain equally prominent.
The gray finish also distinguishes it from WS230’s later ambulance interpretation. Collectors can compare the same basic transport shape across two very different duties.
The driver, canopy and open seating are the key features to establish when identifying a secondhand example. Together they make WS229 a small but versatile transport subject with a clear place beside the infantry collection.
Release record and collecting notes
Sager’s archived WS229 product record lists a release date of August 2013. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
