King & Country Waffen-SS (WS) Line – Overview

The King & Country WS (Waffen-SS) series is one of the most extensive and visually dynamic collections in the company’s World War II catalog. Running from the early WS001 releases into the high WS300s and beyond, the line spans dozens of infantry sets, command figures, vehicles, ambush vignettes, artillery teams, and battlefield scenes. Every piece is crafted in 1:30 scale, hand-painted, and designed with the gritty realism King & Country is known for. The WS range emphasizes dynamic combat action—soldiers advancing through ruins, machine gun teams laying down suppressive fire, and armored halftracks rolling forward under fire—creating dramatic diorama potential for collectors and military history enthusiasts.

Historical Context

Historically, the Waffen-SS served as the armed wing of the Schutzstaffel (SS) during World War II and fought alongside regular German Army (Wehrmacht) units across multiple fronts. The WS catalog reflects this wide deployment with figures inspired by campaigns in Normandy, the Eastern Front, the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Italy, and defensive actions inside Germany late in the war. King & Country includes historically accurate uniforms such as oak leaf and plane tree camouflage smocks, Pea Dot 44 tunics, and standard field grey gear. While the Waffen-SS is a controversial subject due to its connection to Nazi ideology and war crimes, the WS series focuses on historical military depiction rather than political glorification, giving collectors a way to build realistic World War II displays that reflect the historical battlefield as it was.

The Waffen-SS played a central role in enforcing Nazi ideology through violence, and historians widely regard it as one of the most brutal organizations of World War II. Unlike the regular German Army (Wehrmacht), the Waffen-SS combined military function with political fanaticism. Its recruits swore personal loyalty to Adolf Hitler and received ideological training that promoted racial supremacy and total war. Waffen-SS divisions did not simply fight on the front—they carried out executions, terror operations, and ethnic cleansing as part of Nazi strategy. They participated in the invasion of Poland, the Balkans, and the Soviet Union, where they targeted civilians and prisoners as part of “security” operations designed to intimidate and destroy resistance.

The Waffen-SS actively committed some of the war’s worst atrocities. In France, troops of the 2nd SS Panzer Division “Das Reich” massacred 642 civilians at Oradour-sur-Glane in June 1944 as reprisal against the French Resistance. During the Battle of the Bulge, members of Kampfgruppe Peiper from the 1st SS Panzer Division “Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler” executed 84 captured American prisoners in the Malmedy Massacre. In Eastern Europe, Waffen-SS units took part in mass shootings, village burnings, and anti-partisan warfare that killed tens of thousands of civilians in Belarus, Ukraine, and the Baltic states. Several divisions, including the 3rd SS “Totenkopf” and 4th SS “Polizei,” had direct links to earlier concentration camp guard units and carried their brutality to the front lines. Because of its deep involvement in systematic war crimes and crimes against humanity, the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg declared the Waffen-SS a criminal organization after the war.

For Collectors

The K&C Waffen SS collection is surprisingly varied. Spanning across a wide array of battle themes, it features sets from all major combat theaters of WW2. I find the infantry sets the most exciting. The highly detailed compositions and beautifully painted figures are perfect for display. German Infantry in WW2 was highly disciplined and highly motivated to fight for their country. While misguided, they were enormously effective, even while enduring brutal conditions and heavy losses. The Wehrmacht and the Waffen SS suffered catastrophic losses in major combat theaters such as Stalingrad, Kursk and later on the Western front during the Ardennes offensive. Through it all, they remained well organized, highly capable and suffered no drop in morale.

The german army sustained nearly 5.3 million casualties by the end of the war. One of the most striking consequences of these losses was the generational population deficit suffered by the country post-war. So great was the loss of life, and even more so, the loss of young men who were in prime reproductive age, that the result of this effectively wiped out multiple generations of Germans. It is estimated that these losses contributed to a 10-15 million population deficit today.

Despite its dark historical legacy, the King & Country WS (Waffen-SS) series remains one of the most sought-after lines among serious World War II collectors due to its dynamic sculpting, striking camouflage patterns, and dramatic battlefield poses. The detailed oak leaf, plane tree, and Pea Dot 44 camouflage make WS figures visually compelling, and their gritty combat themes fit naturally into dioramas depicting Normandy, the Ardennes, or the Eastern Front.

Many WS sets have been retired or produced in small batches, which drives strong demand and steady appreciation on the secondary market. Early WS figures and vehicles—especially tank crews, MG teams, and SS officers—often sell well above original retail value on eBay and specialist dealers. For display builders, the WS series offers cinematic storytelling potential and pairs easily with German armor from K&C’s other WWII lines, making it a cornerstone of many high-end collections.
