The Operation ToyBox catalog · WS253

The long weapon held upright in WS253 gives the figure a strong vertical shape. King & Country identifies it as a Czech ZB vz. 26, an equipment detail that opens a wider story than the uniform alone.

The family resemblance has a reason

The National Army Museum’s Bren record explains that a modified Czech ZB design was selected and adapted for British .303 ammunition. The Bren name combined Brno and Enfield.

That connection does not make the weapon in WS253 a British Bren. It explains why collectors familiar with British infantry equipment may recognize aspects of the Czech design.

The unit remains part of the description

The Bundesarchiv identifies Handschar with Nazi recruitment and records the division’s war crimes in the Balkans. The model represents a Bosnian Waffen-SS subject within that history.

The anonymous figure should not be assigned the biography of a named recruit or treated as representative of an entire community.

The upright gun distinguishes this release

The stock reaches toward the ground while the man steadies the weapon near his torso. The red fez draws attention to the head, but the vertical gun gives the body its particular collecting identity.

WS252’s shoulder-carried machine gun makes a useful comparison. The two figures share the group’s clothing while carrying different equipment in different ways.

WS253 earns its place through that specific Czech-weapon subject. It can connect a discussion of the Handschar figures with the wider international history of military equipment, while retaining the unit’s serious historical context.

Compare the full gun, hand positions and fez with the reference when identifying a secondhand example. A generic light-machine-gunner title can otherwise blur the distinction between related releases.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived WS253 product record lists a release date of December 2013 and a retirement date of April 2022. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
