The Operation ToyBox catalog · WS083

WS083 pairs Hasso von Manteuffel with a tall tripod-mounted observation instrument. The general’s long winter coat and the narrow vertical equipment create two very different shapes on a snowy base.

A name worth correcting

The archived page title contains the spelling Masso, but its own description identifies Hasso von Manteuffel. This entry uses the corrected personal name while retaining the release code that ties it to the old record.

The description associates him with command of Grossdeutschland in 1944. He was an army commander, so this WS-numbered personality also belongs in the Wehrmacht category.

The later-war command setting

The U.S. Army’s official Ardennes history discusses Manteuffel’s command of Fifth Panzer Army during the December 1944 offensive. It examines the planning and disagreements behind the operation rather than reducing his career to a promotional ranking among generals.

That provides a useful wider context for a winter portrait. It does not establish that the sculpt reproduces a particular observation post or a precisely dated moment in the Ardennes.

The instrument is half the scene

The tall binocular apparatus draws the eye above the general’s head. Its tripod legs spread across the base, creating open spaces that contrast with the solid mass of the coat.

Positioned too close to a tank or wall, that unusual outline can disappear. A little clear space behind the figure makes both the portrait and the equipment easier to read.

Why this personality belongs separately

WS083 is more than an anonymous winter officer. The named subject, corrected spelling and distinctive observation equipment make it a useful catalog entry in its own right. It also demonstrates why manufacturer series codes and historical service categories should work together, rather than being treated as identical classifications.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived WS083 product record lists a release date of September 2006 and a retirement date of November 2011. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
