Historical context

Napoleonic armies relied on coordinated infantry, cavalry and artillery, with flags, musicians and mounted messengers helping carry orders across the battlefield. The NA range makes these different jobs visible. Regimental identity, uniform details and campaign dates matter when choosing which figures belong together.

French Dragoon Officer

An extended sword, crested helmet and moving horse give this dragoon officer a strong directional pose. The green uniform links him visually with the cavalrymen he can lead in a larger display.

Guard Horse Artillery Gun Set

Three crewmen work around a gun with a green carriage and bright barrel. The arrangement gives the artillery a human scale and provides several points of activity around a single weapon.

Coldstream Guards Drummer Boy

Raised drumsticks and decorated sleeves draw attention to this young Coldstream Guards drummer. The red coat connects him to the infantry, while the drum gives him a separate role within the formation.

Collector identification

Four early NA releases that need different checks

A lot described simply as British Napoleonic figures can mix infantry poses and command subjects. Identify each release before treating the lot as a complete set or calculating a per-figure comparison.

Release distinctions checked 17 September 2026
CodeSubjectWhat to verify
NA003Standing firingRecord the standing pose and check the weapon profile against the reference image.
NA004Kneeling firingThe same broad uniform theme does not make it interchangeable with NA003.
NA009Officer with flagRequest the flag face, staff and attachment points. The short title alone does not establish a regiment.
NA010Mounted officerA recorded count of one describes the release, not the number of detachable horse-and-rider parts.

A formation arranged by a seller is not necessarily an original boxed group. List the full codes, missing components and repairs separately; then compare each named release or an explicitly equivalent bundle.

Napoleonic battles in art

Printmakers returned to Waterloo long after 1815. These two works show how infantry, cavalry and commanders were presented to later audiences, with details to compare against the NA figures.

Cavalry at Waterloo

Currier’s crowded battlefield brings mounted officers, cavalrymen and infantry into one scene. Swords, bridles, tall headgear and the close spacing of the horses give plenty to compare with the French dragoon subjects. Published decades after the battle, this is a dramatic interpretation of Waterloo rather than a record made on the day.

The Imperial Guard

This 1898 print places formed infantry behind mounted officers. It is useful alongside the Guard’s marching figures, officer and eagle bearer: each model represents one part of a larger formation. The print also shows how prominently nineteenth-century artists placed commanders and flags within a battle scene.

More about the NA collection

Infantry, musicians and flag bearers

The early 71st figures include loading, ready and defensive poses alongside musicians, a colour bearer and a pioneer. They make a collection more informative when the arrangement explains those roles. A loading man needs room for his ramrod; a pioneer’s axe should remain visible; a flag bearer should not disappear behind the cloth he carries.

The French infantry group adds another set of uniforms and functions. A grenadier, voltigeur, drummer and pioneer should not be treated as interchangeable blue-coated men. Likewise, the green-clad King’s German Legion figures introduce German soldiers in British service. National origin, army affiliation and regimental role are separate pieces of an identification.

Cavalry figures

A directing sword, a guidon and a musician’s instrument communicate different things. K&C’s French dragoon group makes those distinctions particularly clear. A collapsing horse interrupts the movement and reminds the viewer that the animal’s vulnerability was part of cavalry warfare. Leave room around these sets so the action remains legible.

The Scots Greys and Sergeant Ewart bring regimental memory into the collection. Ewart’s capture of the French 45th Regiment’s eagle is a named historical episode; the miniature’s arrangement is an artistic reconstruction. The articles preserve what the catalog photograph actually shows and flag details that should be checked before using a release in an exact campaign-uniform display.

Artillery and command figures

The Guard horse-artillery gun set shows the dismounted stage of a mobile arm. Mounted officers and telescope figures add movement and observation around it. A convincing small position leaves space behind the gun for the crew and a route toward the rear. A decorative wall pressed against the breech can make an attractive model arrangement physically difficult to understand.

Napoleon and Wellington are personality subjects, but their sets also include less famous elements: a horse’s behaviour, an attendant, a basket or a telescope. Those details create a route into the work and relationships around command. The article on Napoleon and the Mameluke attendant distinguishes the generic sculpt title from the documented history of Roustam, rather than assigning an identity without evidence.

Keeping track of your NA sets

Keep the exact code, full pose description and a photograph together. Early retailer listings sometimes omit leading zeroes, and a page address may preserve an incorrect accessory name. Compare the product description with the image. For mounted or multi-figure releases, count people, horses, flags, weapons and ground accessories before comparing prices.

The separate Del Prado catalog offers another way to study Napoleonic uniforms. Its issue numbering belongs to its own publishing collections; a Del Prado NA label is not a K&C NA release. Compare proportions and subject dates before mixing manufacturers in one scene.
