King & Country · Napoleonic · NA028
A long apron and an axe identify NA028 more clearly than his plume. This marching pioneer brings a practical trade into the French infantry group: clearing and opening the way rather than simply carrying another musket.

The apron is the first clue
The pale apron covers much of the lower front of the figure, changing the balance of colour from the ordinary infantry. A tall dark bearskin, red plume, beard and axe make a strong vertical composition. The original description places him in the 3rd Line Infantry Regiment. That detail is more specific than the broad “French Pioneer” title often used in listings.
A useful comparison across armies
The British 71st pioneer NA030 offers a direct companion study. Both figures use aprons and axes, but their headgear, dress and poses are distinct. Display them in separate small groups with a shared caption about practical labour. That approach explains a military function without suggesting the two men belonged to the same formation or met in a documented event.
Watch the axe and the apron edges
Ask for a clear view of the axe head, handle and grip. A shortened shaft changes the recognisable marching pose. The apron’s broad light surface can reveal stains, chips or heavy repainting, while its lower edge may hide handling wear. Check the plume and the weapon carried at the shoulder too. In a diorama, keep the tools visible and use only a small obstacle or timber detail; an oversized pile of scenery can conceal the very features that make NA028 worth collecting.
