King & Country · Napoleonic · NA026
NA026 gives Napoleon a quieter setting than a charging army. A standing attendant offers fruit to the grey horse, making the relationship between ruler, servant and animal the centre of the vignette.

The basket changes the story
The saved photograph shows a basket of apples beside the attendant and a hand held toward the horse’s muzzle. Napoleon gestures from the saddle while the horse stands still. The attendant’s green jacket, red trousers and white turban contrast with the mounted figure’s blue coat and the pale horse. The basket is small, but it is the detail that turns a formal command portrait into a recognisable everyday interaction.
The attendant deserves his own history
Napoleon’s best-known Mameluke attendant was Roustam Raza. The Fondation Napoléon biography traces his passage through enslavement into Napoleon’s household and his varied personal duties. The catalog’s generic servant title does not conclusively name this sculpt as Roustam, but his history gives the role substance beyond colourful dress. It also reminds us that the imperial household was built on unequal personal relationships.
Keep the interaction intact
Place the attendant close enough to the muzzle for the offered apple to make sense, with the basket visible. Check that both human figures, horse and pictured accessories are included in a sale. Inspect the reins, Napoleon’s extended hand and the attendant’s plume. A listing of the mounted emperor alone is not equivalent to the complete vignette; the standing figure supplies much of its distinctive narrative value.
