King & Country · Napoleonic · NA018

NA018 carries a flag whose painted lettering rewards a closer look. The visible “Valeur et Discipline” and battalion wording make the banner a piece of information, not just a patch of tricolour above the soldier.

King & Country French Sergeant with Flag

The cloth is the centre of attention

The flag hangs from a tall staff above a blue-coated figure with contrasting headgear trim. The pale centre panel provides space for lettering, while coloured corners and decoration frame it. The staff’s vertical line gives the set a very different shape from the diagonals of marching muskets. Position it where a viewer can see the flag face rather than only its edge.

A focus for the group’s identity

Flags could help soldiers orient themselves and expressed a unit’s identity. The National Army Museum’s discussion of colours explains their wider symbolic importance. For this set, the best display is one that makes the bearer part of the soldiers around him: a modest colour group, a halt or a marching formation with room around the staff.

Check the lettering as well as the pole

Photograph both sides of a sale example. Paint loss across letters can be more significant to the appearance than a small base chip, and repairs along folds may be visible only from the reverse. Inspect the finial, hand-to-staff connection and lower pole. Leave overhead clearance in a cabinet and avoid lifting the piece by the flag. The reward for that care is a miniature that can tell the viewer something about unit identity before the article’s historical explanation even begins.
