King & Country · Napoleonic · NA122

A standing cuirassier holds a saddle and associated equipment in NA122. He wears his helmet and breastplate, while the bulky load fills much of the space in front of him. No horse is included, despite the clearly cavalry-centered subject.
Historical inspiration
Mounted service involved caring for animals and equipment as well as riding. Saddling, checking harness and preparing a mount were ordinary requirements before a regiment could move. The figure brings that practical work into a series otherwise dominated by charges. A cuirassier’s equipment remained cumbersome even when he was standing beside his horse rather than on it.
Review
The saddle gives the arms a convincing load and introduces an unusual shape to the cavalry range. I like that the armor remains present during an everyday task. It is a particularly distinctive dismounted figure, although its action naturally suggests the separately supplied horse he is preparing.
