King & Country · Napoleonic · NA132
NA132 shows a young Coldstream drummer with both sticks raised above his side drum. The decorated sleeves, red coat and shako give the small figure considerable detail. His drum is carried in front of him, making the musical role immediately apparent.

Historical inspiration
Drums were used to convey calls and help regulate military movement and routine. A drummer’s job was therefore part of the organization of the regiment, not simply entertainment for the troops. The youthful subject also reflects how military service could involve boys in roles different from those of adult infantrymen.
Review
The sleeves and drum provide a dense concentration of painted detail. The stick positions give a sense of playing without making the pose awkward. It is a characterful addition to the Guards, with a different age, height and duty from the surrounding musket-armed men.
