NA085 Scots Grey Charging
Product reference photograph.

King & Country · Napoleonic · NA085

A Scots Grey leans into a charge with his sword extended in NA085. The grey horse, red coat and bearskin cap create the regiment’s familiar silhouette. The horse’s stretched movement and the rider’s forward weapon make this one of the more emphatically active pieces in the earlier cavalry series.

The historical setting

The Scots Greys charged with the Union Brigade at Waterloo. Their initial success carried them into French formations, but the advance also exposed the exhausted cavalry to counterattack. The National Army Museum’s Waterloo account places the famous cavalry action within a battle that continued long afterward.

Review

The straight sword line and galloping horse communicate the subject immediately. Its strength is momentum, particularly compared with NA168’s more measured officer. It is a dramatic interpretation of a charge, rather than a neutral mounted portrait.
