King & Country · Napoleonic · NA131

The Coldstream sergeant in NA131 stands holding a long polearm upright at an angle. His red coat and grey trousers link him to the Guards infantry, but the weapon distinguishes him from their muskets. The figure’s poised stance gives him authority without a shouting gesture.
Rank Expressed Through a Polearm
British infantry sergeants carried polearms that functioned as weapons and recognizable signs of rank. Their duties included helping keep the formation ordered. The long staff therefore expresses a different responsibility from that of a private loading and firing a musket, even though both belonged to the same battalion.
Review
The vertical weapon creates a clean silhouette, while the restrained pose is a useful contrast to the more active Guardsmen. The figure succeeds because rank is communicated through equipment. It adds a recognizable NCO to the unit without relying on an oversized gesture.
