King & Country · Napoleonic · NA035
NA035 carries the sound of the regiment into the cabinet. The pipes, dark feather bonnet, red coat and tartan kilt make him immediately recognizable among the Black Watch figures.

A musician with a regimental identity
Pipers helped express the distinctive culture of Highland regiments. Their instruments also provide a different subject from the muskets and bayonets that dominate an infantry collection. The National Army Museum’s Black Watch history places the regiment at Quatre Bras and Waterloo in 1815, giving the figure a broader context than a decorative Scottish costume.
Where he belongs in a small group
NA036 and NA037 offer restrained companions: a Highlander at rest and a sergeant with a polearm. Together they form a regimental grouping without needing a battle scene. The piper can also accompany marching subjects, but leave space around the instrument so its fine shapes are not lost against a forest of bayonets.
Buying checks specific to the pipes
Inspect the ends of the drones, the mouthpiece and the thin sections near the hands. These are more vulnerable than the broad kilt or coat. The bonnet’s red hackle and the painted hose also deserve close photographs. Keep the code with the image, because Del Prado and other makers offer superficially similar Highland pipers.
