King & Country · Napoleonic · NA069

The green uniform of NA069 opens a story that a shelf of British redcoats can miss. The King’s German Legion served in the British Army, bringing Hanoverian experience and identity into the coalition that fought Napoleon.

A legion shaped by exile

The Bexhill Museum’s history follows Hanoverian soldiers and their families in Britain and the establishment of the Legion. This was not a German unit accidentally attached to a British battle: its service formed part of the British Army’s organisation. That background makes the word “German” on the catalog label worth explaining.

Command among riflemen

NA071’s firing figure and NA076’s loading pose make useful companions. Together, the three show command, discharge and preparation for the next shot. The officer’s sword gives direction to a small group without requiring a full battalion. Leave space between the riflemen and choose cover that does not block their weapons. A wall or orchard edge can suggest a fighting position while keeping the arrangement representative rather than claiming to reconstruct a particular minute at Waterloo.

Why the coalition matters

A collection can make Waterloo look like a contest between two nationally uniform armies. The Legion complicates that picture in a productive way. Its officers and men belonged to a wider network of loyalties and service, and the figure provides a compact entry into that history. Check the sword, scabbard and hands before buying; these thin elements define the officer’s action. A clear label explaining his British service is more useful than adding an unsupported personal name.
