King & Country · Vietnam · VN089
VN089 supplies a 106mm recoilless rifle on its distinctive mounting with one Marine gunner. The longer promotional photograph includes additional Marines, including a loader and observer, which are sold separately. The substantial barrel and open mounting leave the operator visible.
Recoilless rifles reduced recoil by allowing propellant gas to escape rearward. That made a powerful direct-fire weapon possible on a relatively light mounting, although the rearward blast imposed its own limitations. The USMC also used multiple 106mm weapons on the Ontos. This release shows the single-gun arrangement, which has a different crew and vehicle context.
Review
The exposed mounting and gunner make the mechanism easier to appreciate than when similar barrels are grouped on a vehicle. It is a useful specialist weapon, but the catalog photograph needs a clear contents caption: the supplied release is the gun and its single operator.
