King & Country · Vietnam · VN014

The Marine in VN014 raises binoculars to his eyes while holding his M16 muzzle-down in the other hand. His helmet, flak jacket and field equipment match the early Vietnam Marines. The release contains the single NCO; artillery or recoilless-rifle crews shown alongside him elsewhere are separate sets.
The historical setting
A noncommissioned officer had to observe the situation as well as direct his men. Binoculars could help identify positions or assess movement beyond what a rifleman saw through his sights. King & Country also suggests this figure as an observer for its 106mm recoilless rifle, a useful association that does not turn him into part of that gun’s supplied crew.
Review
The lowered rifle and raised binoculars give both hands purposeful jobs. I like the resulting contrast with the many firing poses in the range. It is an especially clear command subject because the observation equipment explains his action immediately.
