Brown outer clothing and a practical standing pose give this company commander a markedly different character from a parade officer. The Del Prado identification places him among the Red forces of the Russian Civil War.
Light headgear and a practical field uniform set this Italian corporal apart from European winter-war subjects. The 1935 Abyssinia label places the figure in Italy’s invasion of Ethiopia, before the Second World War began in Europe.
The tasselled cap catches the eye before the date does. Yet 1922 is the detail that makes this officer interesting: the Spanish Legion was still a young formation, and the setting was Morocco rather than the later Spanish Civil War.
This Del Prado volunteer stands with a carried load and a restrained pose, giving the Spanish Civil War section a subject distinct from the running infantry corporal. The 1937 title identifies foreign volunteer service rather than a generic Spanish soldier.
This Del Prado corporal is shown running, with the body pitched forward and the weapon carried low. The action gives a small figure considerable movement, while the Spanish Civil War identification places it outside the two world wars.
The Del Prado Don Cossack brings the collection into the upheaval following the Russian Revolution. The cap, distinctive trousers and carried weapon give the figure a recognizable Cossack character without including a horse.
