King & Country · Vietnam · VN088
VN088 combines a mortar with a male gunner and female loader. King & Country identifies the weapon as a captured American M29 81mm mortar. The wide catalog photograph also includes additional supply carriers; those are not part of this two-person mortar crew.
The historical setting
Captured weapons and ammunition could supplement equipment obtained from other sources. A mortar provided high-angle fire while remaining more portable than conventional field artillery. The model concentrates on the gunner and loader immediately beside the tube, rather than showing every person needed to move ammunition and sustain a mortar position.
Review
The loader’s raised round makes the action easy to understand, while the gunner’s low position keeps attention on the weapon. The mixed crew gives the set an identity of its own. Its two-figure contents should remain clear when using the wider promotional scene as a reference.
