This Del Prado captain wears a dark blue uniform with red cuffs, gold-colored distinctions and a tall shako. He stands with a sword at his side. The model represents an artillery officer on foot, rather than a gunner operating a cannon; no artillery piece accompanies him.
Blue and red clothing, a patterned shoulder garment and a brown horse give this Arlabán hussar a vivid appearance. The figure adds nineteenth-century Spain to a cavalry shelf that can otherwise be dominated by Napoleonic subjects.
The saluting pose and red headgear make this lieutenant distinct from Del Prado’s other German-uniformed subjects. His identification concerns Spain’s volunteers in German service, rather than the earlier Spanish Civil War.
The tall hat, dark civilian-style clothing and yellow neckcloth set this guerrilla leader apart from regular infantry. Del Prado’s 1812 subject gives the Peninsular War a presence beyond the familiar ranks of uniformed armies.
The tasselled cap catches the eye before the date does. Yet 1922 is the detail that makes this officer interesting: the Spanish Legion was still a young formation, and the setting was Morocco rather than the later Spanish Civil War.
This Del Prado volunteer stands with a carried load and a restrained pose, giving the Spanish Civil War section a subject distinct from the running infantry corporal. The 1937 title identifies foreign volunteer service rather than a generic Spanish soldier.
This Del Prado corporal is shown running, with the body pitched forward and the weapon carried low. The action gives a small figure considerable movement, while the Spanish Civil War identification places it outside the two world wars.
