King & Country · Vietnam · VN091

VN091 shows a cameraman crouching with a motion-picture camera held to his face. His field clothing and equipment place him among the troops, while the camera’s shape separates him from the still photographer Don McCullin in VN048. The figure contains no second crew member.
Filming from a Crouch
Military reporting included moving images as well as newspaper photographs and written dispatches. Cameramen had to work near the action they were recording, making their posture and freedom of movement part of the job. King & Country also draws a connection with the combat-camera scenes in Full Metal Jacket; that cinematic association should be distinguished from a claim that this depicts a named historical cameraman.
Review
The crouch and raised camera make a compact, convincing working pose. It provides a different visual-media role from VN048, so the two are more than alternate versions of the same subject. The camera itself supplies the release’s most distinctive detail.
