King & Country · Vietnam · VN031
VN031’s Australian patrol commander stands with binoculars in one hand and an L1A1 self-loading rifle in the other. He wears a bush hat and green field clothing. The figure was originally offered during King & Country’s Australian visit before becoming more widely available.
The historical setting
Australian operations in Vietnam placed considerable emphasis on patrolling and locating the enemy. The patrol commander’s job included controlling his men and interpreting what they found, not simply adding another rifle to the group. His binoculars and paused stance suggest that observational role, while the SLR distinguishes his equipment from the M16-centered appearance of many US Marine releases.
Review
The combination of hat, rifle and binoculars makes the subject easy to recognize. His slightly open posture gives the figure personality without assigning him an invented incident. It is a strong individual Australian command figure, particularly beside the more guarded movement of the patrol soldiers.
