VN033 M42 Duster
Product reference photograph.

King & Country · Vietnam · VN033

VN033 models the M42 Duster named “Double Trouble,” with twin 40mm Bofors guns in an open mounting. Two seated gunners are included, along with a side-mounted M60 and radio antennas. The olive-drab vehicle’s open fighting area allows the crew and gun mechanism to remain visible.

Designed as a self-propelled antiaircraft weapon, the Duster found a different job in Vietnam. Its rapid-firing guns were useful against ground targets and for protecting positions and convoys. That change of role explains why a vehicle with unmistakable antiaircraft origins belongs among a collection dominated by infantry fighting.

Review

The open mount is the model’s main attraction: both the machinery and the men working it can be seen. The twin barrels create a distinctive outline compared with a tank turret. It is a substantial vehicle subject with more exposed operating detail than an enclosed armored model.
