NA159 Dutch Lancer on Walking Horse A
Product reference photograph.

King & Country · Napoleonic · NA159

NA159 portrays a Dutch lancer of Napoleon’s Guard carrying an upright lance with a red-and-white pennant. The red tunic, square-topped cap and yellow-edged blue saddlecloth produce a vivid combination. The walking horse distinguishes the release from the more dramatic charging cavalry.

The Red Lancer at a Measured Pace

The Guard’s Dutch lancers were commonly known as the Red Lancers, a reference to their distinctive dress. The lance gave a mounted trooper reach, while the pennant and headgear contributed to the unit’s recognizable appearance. The quiet pace here shows the equipment clearly instead of turning the entire composition into a thrusting attack.

Review

The upright lance works well with the measured horse, letting the red uniform and horse furniture carry the interest. It is one of the more readable cavalry poses for appreciating dress and equipment. The calm movement also makes a useful contrast with NA162’s musician.
