King & Country · Vietnam · VN054
VN054 portrays a Vietnamese woman carrying a small child against her side. Her conical hat, patterned blouse and dark trousers give the figure a civilian appearance quite distinct from the range’s uniformed troops. The child clings to her, with both faces visible.
A Civilian Family in the Vietnam Range
The Vietnam War affected people whose homes and daily lives lay within areas of military operations. A civilian figure does not need to represent a named battle to belong in that history. King & Country presents this pair as a mother moving her child to safety, but does not identify a particular family, village or date.
Review
The patterned blouse and the child’s position give the pair individuality. The sculpt conveys dependence and movement without relying on an exaggerated expression of panic. It is a valuable civilian subject because both people remain the focus of the release.
