King & Country · First World War · FW058
FW058 combines a German 77mm field gun with three crewmen in 1914 dress. The shield, large spoked wheels and low trail dominate the model, with the gunners arranged around the working end of the piece. This is the early-war alternative to FW057’s later-war crew.
An Early-War German Gun Crew
Field artillery accompanied the army into battle and supported infantry with concentrated shellfire. A gun position required much more than the men immediately around the breech: teams, ammunition vehicles and communications connected it to a larger battery. The three figures here depict the immediate action at one gun rather than the full manpower needed to keep it supplied.
Review
The model has a clear mechanical focal point, and the different crew poses prevent it from becoming a row of identical attendants. Its value is the complete gun-and-crew composition. The spiked helmets matter when choosing between this release and FW057; the two sets represent different visual stages of the war.
