King & Country · First World War · FW061
King & Country’s Foch leans into a telescope on a tall wooden tripod. His red trousers and kepi place the figure in the colorful early-war French army, while the black coat separates him visually from the marching infantry. The instrument is a substantial part of the release’s composition.

Historical inspiration
Ferdinand Foch served under Joffre before taking responsibility for coordinating the Allied armies in 1918. That later role involved bringing separate national commands into a common strategy. The miniature instead shows the more immediate business of observing a battlefield. It should not be read as a portrait of his 1918 clothing merely because that was his best-known appointment.
Review
The telescope gives this named personality something distinctive to do. The forward lean is much more expressive than an officer standing with hands behind his back. Its early-war uniform is also a useful distinction from portraits of Foch as the senior Allied commander near the end of the conflict.
