FW092 Kaiser Bill’s Staffwagen
Product reference photograph.

King & Country · First World War · FW092

FW092 is a Mercedes staff vehicle with an enclosed rear compartment, outside steps and a side canopy. A driver is included at the wheel; the Kaiser is not. The tall body, roofline and elaborate front lamps give it a markedly different character from an ordinary open staff car.

Product reference photograph. King & Country photograph, via Sagers Soldiers.

King & Country’s release account describes the real vehicle as carrying sleeping, washing and working facilities for Wilhelm II. Such a vehicle combined travel with the amenities expected by an imperial headquarters. It is a reminder that motorization could support command and accommodation as well as move guns or supplies. The interior facilities described in the history should not all be assumed to be separately modeled accessories.

Review

The unusual bodywork is the attraction here. Steps, canopy and windows make the intended use legible, while the driver establishes its scale. It is an engaging specialist vehicle for collectors interested in headquarters subjects, particularly because its identity comes from its construction rather than a weapon mounted on it.
