FW036 Uhlan Bugler
Product reference photograph. King & Country photograph, via Sagers Soldiers.

FW036 is a mounted German Uhlan sounding his bugle. The square-topped cavalry headgear, grey uniform and brown horse distinguish him from the infantry musicians in the FW range. His instrument is raised while the horse remains comparatively composed: the action is in the rider rather than a theatrical gallop.

Historical inspiration

Cavalry needed ways to pass orders across a dispersed formation. Bugle and trumpet calls provided recognizable signals without relying on every rider hearing a shouted command. Uhlans were lancers, but their military work also included reconnaissance, screening and carrying information. A musician belonged to that working organization, alongside the men carrying its more conspicuous weapons.

Review

The contrast between the bugler’s raised arm and the restrained horse makes this an appealing command figure. It offers more personality than another lowered lance, although it represents a very particular signaling moment. The square-topped headgear is the detail that makes the subject immediately identifiable.
