King & Country · Battle of the Bulge · BBA003
King & Country BBA003 Nuts! puts four men opposite one another during the siege of Bastogne. McAuliffe stands with his hands tucked into his coat while a German officer gestures across the gap. An American guard and a second German officer complete the group. The interest here is in the exchange between them; none of the figures needs a vehicle or a large scenic base to explain the scene.

In the set: Four figures: McAuliffe, an American guard and two German officers.
McAuliffe’s reply at Bastogne
The famous reply came on 22 December 1944, after German representatives presented a surrender demand. McAuliffe’s one-word answer was typed, and Colonel Joseph Harper took it back to the German party. That makes the miniature a dramatization: it brings McAuliffe and the opposing officers together, compressing an exchange that actually passed through intermediaries.

That distinction gives the set something useful to discuss. It is a recognizable account of an event, arranged for a small display, rather than a literal reconstruction of a photograph. Leaving a little space between the two pairs preserves the disagreement suggested by their poses. A cramped cluster makes the pointing arm harder to read.
Review
The restrained pose of McAuliffe is the best part of the composition. Against the other officer’s raised arm, his stillness does much of the work. The long coats also make the four figures look like participants in the same winter scene without giving everyone the same silhouette. Collectors looking for a named personality and a complete small group get both here. The historical compression is worth knowing before treating it as a reconstruction of the surrender negotiations.
