King & Country · Afrika Korps · AK082
AK082 contains two prone figures: an observer with binoculars and a telephone operator with an open notebook. King & Country identifies them as an officer and NCO directing artillery or mortar fire.
Historical inspiration
An August 1941 Field Artillery Journal discussion of German communications described the portable Type 33 field telephone. Wired communication gave observers a means of passing information back through an artillery network.
Review
The notebook is a good detail. It makes the telephone operator look occupied with recording and passing information, rather than merely holding a handset. Both figures stay low, consistent with an observation position under threat. This is a useful addition to an artillery collection because it depicts a different part of the crew’s work from loading and firing.
