King & Country · First World War · FW134

FW134 depicts a German bugler sounding his instrument while carrying infantry equipment. Pale drill clothing contrasts with dark boots and a spiked helmet, and the raised bugle projects from the face. The pack and slung weapon make him a soldier with a signaling role rather than a concert musician.
A Signal on Prewar Maneuvers
This figure belongs to King & Country’s Baden 114th Infantry Regiment on maneuvers before the war, described in Toy Soldier & Model Figure’s contemporary release coverage. That setting explains the distinctive pale clothing, rather than the field-grey appearance most associated with German soldiers in combat. Recognizable calls helped direct military routine and movement. The bugler retains his infantry equipment while performing that specialized duty.
Review
The pale drill uniform is the interesting distinction here. It gives a prewar training subject a different appearance from the combat troops, while the instrument and field kit explain the soldier’s role. The pose is direct, and the dark helmet and equipment keep the light-colored body visually well defined.
