FW106 Lieutenant Werner Voss
Product reference photograph.

King & Country · First World War · FW106

Werner Voss appears standing in uniform and tall boots, with one hand at his hip. FW106 is an individual portrait figure: neither his aircraft nor another pilot is included. Compared with FW103’s Boelcke in flying leathers, the uniformed presentation is notably restrained.

Voss belonged to the young generation of German fighter pilots whose careers were compressed into the war’s rapid development of aerial combat. He is particularly associated with the Fokker triplane and his fatal combat in September 1917. That aircraft association helps explain his place in the FW aviation range, but the standing miniature does not reproduce the final combat itself.

Review

The restrained stance lets the face, cap and uniform carry the identification. It is less theatrical than many named-pilot figures, which is part of its appeal. Collectors seeking a scene full of action may prefer another subject; this one succeeds as a straightforward companion portrait to the aircraft collection.
