FW146 Renault FT Tank

King & Country · First World War · FW146

FW146 models the French Renault FT with a short gun, compact turret and prominent rear tail. Irregular camouflage patches break up the riveted hull. The tracks extend around a relatively small fighting compartment, giving the vehicle a very different shape from the British rhomboid tanks of the same war.

Historical inspiration

The FT placed the driver forward, the engine behind and the main weapon in a rotating turret. That arrangement became enormously influential. The Tank Museum’s FT account explains the idea of a lighter, more maneuverable vehicle that could be produced in quantity. Its two-man crew also meant the commander had to combine observation and weapon duties.

Review

The camouflage and track structure make this little tank visually busy without obscuring its distinctive shape. The rear tail is a particularly useful recognition feature. Its appeal is strongest for collectors interested in tank design: the model represents an important change in layout, not simply a smaller version of a British heavy tank.
