King & Country · First World War · FW103
FW103 portrays Oswald Boelcke in a dark leather flying coat with a bottle in his hand. The open coat, scarf and tall boots make this a relaxed ground portrait rather than a pilot seated at the controls. The bottle is part of the sculpt’s celebratory character.

The historical setting
Boelcke helped turn early fighter flying into a discipline that could be taught. His principles emphasized tactical advantage and controlled attacks rather than treating aerial combat as a succession of individual improvisations. He also influenced Manfred von Richthofen. Killed in 1916, Boelcke is an appropriate subject for the earlier German fighter-war story rather than its final campaigns.
Review
The long black coat creates a strong silhouette, and the casual accessory differentiates him from the range’s more formal officers. The model is most compelling as a named personality portrait. Its informal pose gives some welcome variety to the familiar image of the decorated fighter ace.
