FW100 Field Telephone
Product reference photograph.

King & Country · First World War · FW100

FW100 shows a German serviceman kneeling beside a field telephone, with the receiver held to his ear. The box, cable and his listening pose form a small, self-contained scene. King & Country presented him among its German airfield support figures rather than as an airborne radio operator.

A German Airfield Connection

Telephones connected ground organizations even when aircraft themselves had very limited communications equipment. Wired systems also had vulnerabilities: calls could be intercepted, and damaged lines interrupted communication. GCHQ’s account of the La Boisselle discovery describes the First World War struggle to keep telephone traffic secure. A handset was part of a network, not a guarantee of reliable or private contact.

Review

The bent knee and listening expression give the operator a convincing task without exaggerated movement. The telephone box is an important part of the identity, so the figure rewards a closer look. It adds a specific communications role to the airfield range.
