FW052 Machine Gun Set
Product reference photograph.

King & Country · First World War · FW052

A kneeling German gunner operates a Maxim-pattern machine gun while a second soldier brings ammunition. King & Country identifies the weapon as the Maxim ’08. The belt hanging from the receiver and the water jacket around the barrel make the equipment as prominent as either man. Both figures wear early-war uniforms and spiked helmets.

Sustained machine-gun fire depended on ammunition supply, cooling and crew work. The weapon’s ability to fire automatically did not make it self-sufficient. Its accompanying soldier therefore has a practical role: the ammunition must keep reaching the gun. The Royal Armouries’ First World War weapons survey places the German gun within the broader Maxim family.

Review

The ammunition carrier makes this pair more informative than a lone gunner. The prominent brass-colored jacket is visually striking, though the early-war dress gives the set a narrower period than later steel-helmeted crews. The readable belt and crew relationship are its strongest features.
