A mortar team gives a collection a different activity from riflemen aiming along the ground. The steeply angled tube changes the visual language of the position, while the two operators emphasize shared work.

The miniature provides a representative weapon-team scene rather than a documented photograph of a named crew. Its institutional setting belongs with the WH series history, which places the equipment within the wider wartime story.

Build around the low centre

A view from slightly above lets the hands, mortar and bases remain visible. Tall cover directly in front can obscure almost the whole team, leaving only helmets and the raised arm above it.

Try a shallow position with room at the sides instead. The two different kneeling postures already provide enough variation to make a small scene interesting.

Keep the original combination identifiable

The collecting value of the entry is the pairing of these two figures with this mortar. An assortment of German kneeling soldiers is not necessarily WH017. Compare the pose of each man and the equipment arrangement with the reference photo before treating a mixed lot as a complete example.
