King & Country · Battle of the Bulge · BBA039
BBA039 Stretcher Party is a four-figure group built around a casualty being carried away. Two GIs take the ends of the stretcher while a medic walks alongside. The blanket over the wounded man and the bearers’ long coats give the scene its winter setting without needing snow-covered scenery.
In the set: Two stretcher bearers, a wounded man and an accompanying medic, with the stretcher.
Evacuating the wounded
Evacuation around Bastogne was vulnerable to the same interrupted roads as ammunition and food supply. The 580th Ambulance Company’s December 1944 account describes its move from a snowy field near Bastogne to Martelange, followed by another withdrawal as the German advance continued. Moving casualties required a working route behind the bearers as well as medical help at the front.
The third standing figure matters. He separates the group from a simple two-man carrying pose and makes it read as an organized evacuation. The stretcher creates a long, fairly low shape; the medic beside it breaks that line and gives the viewer another face to follow. This is also a useful subject for a street scene away from the firing positions.
Review
The composition is easy to understand from the reference photographs. The wounded man remains visible, and the medic’s helmet markings identify his role without a caption. The set has more narrative detail than its footprint first suggests, especially when viewed from the side. It would be my choice over another firing pair when a winter collection already has plenty of combat figures and needs to show what happened to casualties.
