Overview

King & Country’s AK076 is a single military policeman whose equipment makes his occupation immediately legible. He wears a tropical sun helmet with goggles above the brim, a green tunic and pale trousers gathered above his boots. Across his chest hangs the metal gorget associated with the Feldgendarmerie, and he holds a red-and-white traffic paddle in both hands. A holstered sidearm sits at his hip; the paddle, rather than a drawn weapon, is the centre of the pose. His head turns slightly to one side, as if watching a vehicle approach. The figure has enough character to stand alone, but his most natural setting is somewhere other people are trying to get through.

Historical inspiration

The Feldgendarmerie served as military police within the German armed forces. Traffic discipline was a central duty, alongside patrol work and enforcement of military discipline; military police detachments were attached to divisions. In a moving column, controlling a junction or preventing vehicles from blocking one another was practical work with immediate consequences. A traffic paddle translates that job into a gesture a driver can understand at a distance. The gorget serves a different purpose in the miniature: it identifies the man’s authority even when his hand is lowered. Together, the two objects explain the figure more effectively than another elaborate combat pose would.

Give him a junction rather than a firing line. One truck waiting beside the track and a motorcycle approaching from another direction create a small, readable scene with only three purchases. Face the policeman toward the approaching crew so his sideways glance has a purpose. The broad sun helmet also makes a useful contrast with the steel helmets in earlier AK groups. For a collector, the paddle edge, its narrow handle and the helmet brim are the vulnerable points to inspect. If the figure is photographed only from behind, ask for a front view: the gorget and paddle are the very details that make AK076 worth choosing.
