Del Prado · Figure Study
Del Prado’s Norman knight stands on foot with a spear, small checkered pennon and matching round shield. Mail covers much of the body, while a dark red garment and pale lower legs break up its texture. The reference dates the subject to 1025, well before the Norman invasion of England.
The historical setting
Normandy’s warrior elite developed from the settlement and assimilation of Scandinavian groups within a Frankish environment. The early-eleventh-century date is an important distinction from the later mounted knights most closely associated with 1066. This figure presents the equipment of a warrior standing on foot; its title does not mean that a horse is missing.

Review
The round shield and matching pennon create a memorable visual identity. The mail gives the body texture, while the spear supplies height without an exaggerated fighting pose. It is most interesting as an earlier Norman subject, with its date kept visible.
