Del Prado · Napoleonic France and Naples

Murat’s spectacular clothing can overshadow the complicated career beneath it. This mounted portrait represents a cavalry leader who rose to a throne—and eventually tried to preserve that throne by breaking with Napoleon.

The tall plume, ornate clothing and decorated horse furniture make Murat one of the most conspicuous riders in the range. The horse’s lifted leg adds movement, while the rider’s extended arm gives the composition direction. This is a personality piece as much as a uniform miniature.

From the ranks to Naples

Murat rose from modest origins to become one of Napoleon’s closest associates. His cavalry service included Austerlitz, Eylau and Borodino. He married Caroline Bonaparte and became King of Naples in 1808. The Fondation Napoléon’s biography shows how closely military success, family connection and political advancement became entwined.

The kingship changed the stakes. Murat was no longer only a subordinate whose career depended on the emperor; he had a kingdom to preserve. In 1814 he reached an agreement with Austria. His later attempt to recover his position ended in capture and execution in 1815.

That arc gives the flamboyant miniature more substance than a description of its colours. The display can begin with the spectacular rider and lead toward the difficult relationship between loyalty and personal rule.

The reference does not supply a secure year for this particular outfit, so this entry avoids assigning it to one battle. Murat’s career dates provide context; they do not establish that the sculpt reproduces what he wore at Eylau or Borodino.

A portrait that needs breathing room

Leave enough space above the plume and around the extended arm. Inspect both in close photographs, along with the horse’s raised leg and decorative tack. The many small colour boundaries are good places to detect thick restoration paint.

Murat makes a natural centrepiece among ordinary troopers, but a caption should carry more than “Napoleon’s cavalry commander.” The king and the political gamble are part of the same person represented by the model.
