Del Prado · Figure Study

Del Prado’s captain of the 1st Bavarian Dragoons stands in a pale uniform with a red front, tall helmet and conspicuous plume. His sword is held at his side. This is a dismounted figure from the Napoleonic infantry-and-officer collection, so the cavalry title does not imply that a horse is supplied.
Historical inspiration
Bavaria was one of Napoleon’s important German allies during the period shown. Its army retained its own uniforms and organization rather than becoming visually indistinguishable from French troops. A Bavarian cavalry officer therefore broadens a Napoleonic collection beyond the familiar opposition of French blue and British red. The figure’s specific regiment and date range are useful parts of its identity.
Review
The tall helmet and red uniform front provide much of the figure’s character. The quiet stance makes those details easy to examine. It is an appealing choice for a collector interested in Napoleon’s allied armies, especially because it represents cavalry dress without requiring a mounted model.
