The Operation ToyBox catalog · WS178

WS178 is tall because of what the figure carries. Above the marching man in black Panzer uniform rises a red banner with a swastika, lettering and an eagle finial. The pole and cloth dominate the silhouette, making this a ceremonial subject within the WS range.

Read the banner as a historical object

The release identifies a Das Reich banner bearer. The visible Nazi emblem is central to the subject: it expresses the organization’s political allegiance, rather than serving as a neutral splash of colour in a military display.

The black uniform places the carrier visually among Panzer personnel. His marching step supplies limited movement, while the tall pole keeps the eye focused on the standard above him.

Ceremony and combat are different settings

This figure makes most sense in a clearly labeled ceremonial or unit-history grouping. It should not automatically be placed beside combat infantry as though a parade banner were ordinary equipment in every front-line action.

The Das Reich name refers to an SS formation serving the Nazi regime. A historical catalog can document its uniforms and symbols while keeping that institutional identity explicit. The imagery should not be detached from its original purpose or presented as an endorsement.

A practical identification checklist

The banner face, upper finial, pole and marching pose are the main features to compare in a listing. A distant photograph of a black-uniformed figure is not enough to distinguish it from other standard bearers in the broader King & Country catalog.

For display, a simple background keeps the lettering and shape readable. Leave sufficient height above the figure and avoid using the pole as a handling point. WS178 adds a ceremonial object to the series record, with an entirely different visual role from the nearby tanks and infantry. Its place in a thoughtful collection rests on accurate identification and context, allowing the viewer to understand what the symbol represented and why it appears on this particular miniature.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived WS178 product record lists a release date of September 2010 and a retirement date of September 2013. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
