The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD239
Four GIs arrive with four different silhouettes: a leather jacket, a pale field jacket, a green-uniformed gunman and a relaxed figure with equipment slung over his shoulder. DD239 is the point where the catalog takes a deliberate turn toward war-movie nostalgia.

The bank job is a screen story
King & Country’s release description sends the men after gold behind German lines. The resemblance to Kelly’s Heroes is clear: the 1970 film’s synopsis follows an American soldier leading an offbeat group toward a fortune in gold.
The set is best understood as a film-inspired ensemble. Its playful premise should not become evidence that this particular bank raid happened during the war.
Four personalities without four identical poses
The leather-jacketed man has a loose, open stance. The pale jacket gives the next figure a bright centre. The third man keeps his weapon across the body, while the fourth’s raised arm and carried gear create the widest upper outline.
The group is immediately more informal than a squad arranged in matching combat poses. That difference is part of the appeal: the figures suggest characters with their own habits and attitudes.
The real equipment helped build the screen world
The American Film Institute’s production record notes director Brian G. Hutton’s explanation that filming in Yugoslavia offered access to American Second World War equipment still in military use.
That is a useful bridge between movie collecting and military collecting. The story is fictional, but the production’s access to vehicles helped give its adventure a tangible wartime setting.
A small cast for a larger display
DD261’s Oddball Sherman develops the same film-inspired branch of the range. The four men can also stand alone near a building, where their different postures are easier to appreciate.
DD239 belongs in the retrospective as an example of how cinema shapes the subjects collectors recognize. It brings humour and screen memory into the cabinet while keeping the distinction between a movie caper and wartime history clear.
Release record and collecting notes
Sager’s archived DD239 product record lists a release date of October 2014 and a retirement date of June 2020. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
