The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL034

AL034 turns the viewer around. Instead of looking along the direction of an Australian advance, we face the soldier trying to stop it. The Ottoman infantryman thrusts his bayonet outward, giving a display a defensive response rather than another figure moving in the same direction.

A pose with an intended opponent

The product description places him against a mounted Australian. That relationship is important when arranging the miniature: the angle of the weapon and the space in front of it should make sense together. He can look oddly isolated in a straight row of firing figures, but placed at the edge of an encounter the pose becomes immediately readable.

I would keep the rifle clear of adjacent horse legs and other projecting equipment. The scene can suggest close combat without physically tangling the miniatures. A slight offset also lets the viewer see both the defender and the approaching rider.

Where the mounted action changed

Accounts of Beersheba describe different experiences after the riders reached the trenches. Some men dismounted to clear positions; others continued toward the town. The Australian War Memorial’s account helps explain why the AL collection includes both mounted movement and close fighting on foot.

Giving the defender a place in the collection

A campaign display is more informative when the opposing soldiers have recognizable tasks and reactions. AL034 contributes that perspective in a single pose. It is a useful partner for a charging subject, but it also deserves to be viewed as an individual figure rather than an anonymous obstacle.

The catalog title uses “Turkish”; the historical setting is the Ottoman army of the First World War. Keeping that terminology in the article and the search categories helps distinguish these figures from subjects belonging to the later Turkish republic.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL034 product record lists July 2012 as the release date and July 2021 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
