The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL049
AL049 contains a small catalog trap with a good historical story behind it. The title calls the figure a “Radioman,” but the product description explicitly says he is using a field telephone. Keeping that distinction visible makes this a more useful reference article than simply repeating the name on a box.

A call from the defensive line
The described figure kneels with a pistol in one hand while trying to communicate with his superiors. King & Country frames the scene as news of an Australian breakthrough. The interesting collecting feature is that the soldier is doing two things at once: trying to report the situation while remaining ready to defend himself.
That combination gives him a natural place in an Ottoman position behind the immediate firing line. I would leave room around the telephone and the operating hand, rather than hiding the equipment among sandbags. Otherwise the very detail that distinguishes the release becomes hard to see.
A surviving telephone from Beersheba
The Australian War Memorial holds a German-made field telephone captured at Beersheba. Its description explains the handset, separate battery arrangement and capacity for telephone calls and Morse signaling. It is excellent context for understanding why a communications figure belongs in this campaign.
The museum object does not prove that the miniature depicts that exact telephone model. It does, however, offer something better than a generic radio reference: real equipment from the relevant historical setting, with its functions explained.
Why a support figure changes the scene
AL049 adds a command problem to a collection otherwise dominated by weapons and movement. Someone has to recognize what is happening and pass the information along. Paired with an officer or placed behind riflemen, the figure suggests an organized position under pressure. It is a compact subject with a surprisingly large narrative role.
Release record and collecting notes
Sager’s archived AL049 product record lists April 2013 as the release date and July 2021 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
