King & Country · Vietnam · VN015

The VN015 Ontos looks unlike a conventional tank. Its compact tracked hull carries clusters of long recoilless-rifle barrels, with the commander visible in the open top hatch. The reference photograph makes the contrast between the low hull and projecting weapons especially clear. This is a vehicle to display with room around it, not squeeze between two larger tanks.

An anti-tank design with a different wartime job

The National Museum of the Marine Corps’ Vietnam weapons guide records six 106mm recoilless rifles and explains the Ontos’s shift from its original anti-tank purpose to direct support for ground troops. The museum highlights its use alongside M48 tanks in the fighting at Huế. That change of role is the historical reason the model belongs with the VN infantry, even though its unusual shape can make it look like a specialist vehicle from another kind of battlefield.

Build around the hull and projecting guns

A plain section of road with a wall set back from the vehicle can explain the urban-support theme without swallowing the model in rubble. Keep enough clearance at the front and sides that all six barrels can be seen. Infantry placed slightly away from the hull gives a clearer sense of the vehicle’s scale. A crowded arrangement can conceal the very features that distinguish the Ontos from the rest of the armored collection.

Inspect it from more than one direction

Ask for front, rear and overhead photographs. Count the main barrels, inspect their alignment and compare the smaller projecting parts with the reference. Look at the commander, the top machine gun, antennas and exposed track edges. Different camera angles can make a straight barrel appear bent, so a second view matters before deciding. For transport, the long projections deserve their own clearance; a box that merely fits the hull is not enough. Keep a photograph of the complete model with its exact code in your records.
