King & Country · Vietnam · VN009

VN009 places a kneeling corpsman beside a seated, bare-chested Marine whose torso has been bandaged. The wounded man’s helmet rests on the ground. The figures face one another closely enough that the scene reads as an exchange, not two unrelated poses. It brings a quieter and more vulnerable moment into the VN collection.

Why the corpsman belongs to the Navy

The helper is a Navy corpsman serving with Marines. That distinction matters when labeling the set or sorting a collection by service. The Hampton Roads Naval Museum’s “Corpsman Up!” exhibit explains that corpsmen accompanied Marine units as well as serving in hospitals and aboard ships. Their work included routine illness and heat-related problems as well as combat wounds. VN009 concentrates on a casualty scene within that wider medical role.

A small scene benefits from restraint

A wall corner, a patch of sheltered ground or a clear route toward a vehicle can be enough. Keep the bandages, hands and helmet visible. Surrounding the pair with firing figures on every side can overwhelm the relationship that makes the release interesting. For a larger medical display, compare the separate Australian VN053 Helping the Wounded article: nationality, pose and release contents should remain clear even when the themes overlap.

Do not confuse the medical releases

VN009 is the seated casualty and kneeling corpsman scene. VN018 is the separate Combat Casualty Set associated with the M274 Mule display. They should not be treated as interchangeable simply because both contain medical subjects. When buying VN009 loose, compare both people, their relative arrangement, the helmet and the base with the reference. Ask about repairs to the outstretched arms and hands. The value of the set lies in the interaction, so a missing or mismatched figure changes it substantially.
